I didn't mean to completely disappear off the face of the planet but if you follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram (my newest obsession!) I let on that the hunk and I were on a 6 day mini vacay slash epic road trip.
Since it's Wednesday, I figure I'll turn my trip recap into my weekly WIAW post with Jen from Peas and Crayons. So without further ado, my What I Ate...While on the road for way longer than I should be...

On Thursday, for old time's sake, we stopped by Caleb's Grandad's old office where he used to be Mayor. Trust me when I say that all of the city clerks went crazy over our little guy, he really knows how to ham it up for the ladies :D

Finally, on Friday Morning we put our stunna shades and game faces on and made our way down to Savannah armed with a bunch of date night questions, healthy snacks, a comfy pillow, and silly road trip games for the 9 hour drive.

And while I would normally prefer to eat a healthy, clean meal that I packed, when we arrived to Savannah, I declared that there was no way in hell I was going to pass up on all of the delicious southern seafood while there. We like to live a little - which is exactly why we tried Modern Rocks Grill on River Street for dinner that night.
One word, 3 syllables: AMAZING.

We started out with spicy, garlic and white wine mussels and I had cedar plank Mahi with almond pesto, candied squash and roasted garlic asparagus while the husband had Spicy Shrimp and Grits for our entrees. Everything was just as mindblowingly amazing as it sounds.
Even the people dining there were amazing. A couple next to us overheard a conversation the hunk and I were having about his upcoming deployment and they generously paid for a drink for him. And I'm not talking about any drink, I'm talking about a ridiculous $56.00 margarita!

That is some good ol' Southern hospitality right there. We also loved how when they brought out the margarita, they made this grand show out of displaying the various liquors in the drink. Needless to say, this was a night the hunk and I will definitely never forget.
After dinner, the hunk and I walked around while enjoying the sights and scenery of Savannah but made it back to our hotel at old people time since we had an early start on the road the next morning.

That Saturday morning, we filled up on various snacks we packed for the 6 hour trip. We snacked on Coconut Water, Pistachios, cheese, almonds, grapefruit, celery sticks and carrots with PB.

After unpacking and stretching our legs, the hunk and I made our way to Jackson's for a quick bite to eat before we had to get ready for the wedding. We split the lobster sushi roll and Asian zinger wings and again were blown away by how delicious everything was.
Food is so much better the further you get away from Fort Bragg, NC ;)

Finally, it was time for the beautiful wedding that we had made this whole trip for. The bride was a childhood friend of mine from Korea and it was awesome seeing her finally tie the knot with the perfect man for her.
Everything about the wedding was perfect; the bride and groom, the decor, location, and the food made for an awesome evening. We loved our crab stuffed salmon for dinner and the little cupcakes we had for our favors.

After our fun night of partying, on Sunday morning we had breakfast at the hotel, then got back into our car to make the trip back to DC to reunite with our baby.
For the trip back, we packed protein bars, almonds, apples, bananas, jalapeno popcorn, and my favorite drink for the road, Naked Green Juice.

We drove for a total of 1900 miles, and spent 41 hours in the car together. It wasn't easy but I pumped every two hours on the road to keep my supply up and by the end of the trip, I started to get VERY delirious. We ended up making stupid videos like this:
...And almost biting each others heads off towards the end. But it was still a great last hurrah before the hunk and I part ways again. I'm normally not a road trip person but being in the car together for so long forced us to have a great time conversing, laughing, and learning more about each other. It's amazing that even though we've been together for so long, we still surprise and learn new things about each other every day. The hunk put it best when he said that we were alive for "20 something years before we met each other, and a lot can happen in those years". Smart man, that one.
I'm also extremely proud that we managed to squeeze in a few runs and resistance band workouts while away, and that we mostly stuck to clean eating while on the road for what felt like forever. But even though I did my best to stay on track while on the road, nothing beats coming back to your own kitchen to prepare your own meals and to sleep in your own bed.
Home, sweet, home :)

Our first stop was on Wednesday. We drove 5 hours to DC to drop off the baby with Grandma and Grandpa since we all know Caleb would never in a million years last 1900 miles in the car. While we were up there I finally got to meet my little nephew for the first time! He is just as precious, and perfect as I imagined. I definitely fell in love with the little fella' :)

Then we finally made it to our beautiful hotel in Tampa! We stayed at the Westin Harbor Island on the water and it was gorgeous! Perfect place to stay for a little Mommy/Daddy time away :)
We also lucked out with a pretty decent view of the bay too.

We stopped in Savannah again for the evening and then made the 9 hour trip back to DC on Monday morning. On Tuesday, we made our final 6 hour drive back here to North Carolina.

What a fun road trip! Savannah is on my vacation list. I love that jalepeno popcorn! Ate it all the time while I was in AIT at Ft Bragg. I also drink a lot of the Naked green juice, I certainly have no pregnancy digestion issues, hahaha! :-)
ReplyDeleteHahah I <3 how honest you are!
DeleteSounds like a really fun trip. I Love your turquoise necklace!
ReplyDeleteThank you :) Jcrew!
DeleteThat's a lotta driving woman. Looks like you had fun though. :)
ReplyDeleteHoly hell it WAS a lot of driving. Def not doing that for awhile haha
DeleteHow have I not had modern rocks grill!??! omg! I was seriously just in savannah not too long ago and my foodie radar failed me ;) Glad you guys had a great trip!!!! Just think -- the next road trip will involve ME!!!! haha well hopefully at least =) love ya mucho!
ReplyDeletehappy wiaw!
Next road trip will DEFINITELY involve you. I'm so stoked!
DeleteYou love GREAT girl ... love the turquoise necklace and your outfit for the wedding. Seeing the pics of Savannah makes me SO excited to MOVE! Even more excited about being close to you though ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm excited for you to move too, you'll love it there!
DeleteThere is nothing quite like hours upon hours stuck in the car together to bring out the best in everyone! We've actually gotten pretty good at spending hours in the car together - its amazing how many topics you can cover...and how many silent miles go by without being awkward!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great time! And Caleb is adorable!
So true about the not being awkward part! That's how you know it's love :)
DeleteRoadtrips... so fun and so miserable all at the same time! I drove drove 36 hours STRAIGHT (only stopping to go to the bathroom and eat and maybe possibly climb around in the Badlands for a few minutes) with my not-yet-husband and my not-yet-mother-in-law in summer 2010. We drove and slept in shifts. I was pretty sure I was going to go insane by the end (all I wanted was to change my clothes!), but it definitely helped my MIL and I's relationship!
ReplyDeleteIn 2009, we drove what should have been 11 hours out to Gettysburg and DC from Chicago and while we were stopped pumping gas in middle of nowhere Ohio, our car got sideswiped by a dude driving a Budget truck. He hooked his back bumper on the back of the car, dragged it the whole way down the passenger side of the car, took the mirror off and then literally ripped the front half of the car off. I thought we were both going to cry. I definitely thought the other driver was going to cry when he saw my absolutely furious then-boyfriend-now-husband and the ridiculously Marine Corp'd out car and the Purple Heart plates.
OMG hilarious story! Sorry about getting sideswiped though, NOT cool :(
DeleteSounds like a fun road trip! I don't know if I could do it, I get too antsy and need to fly lol but hubby loves to drive so maybe one day I'll give in.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually the same way, I HATE road trips. But we wanted to save money since flying to Tampa from DC for the both of us was 800 dollars. Um, no thanks! I'll suffer in the name of saving a few dollars haha.
DeleteThankfully (or maybe not thankfully) we haven't had to endure very many road trips. We've gone to NC twice, and GA a few times, but GA is only about 6 hrs.. it's long, but not THAT long. I did have to drive my Grandparents home from NC last October - that will test every single nerve in your body !!
ReplyDeleteWe stayed at the Westin for Gasparilla & I was really disappointed in the hotel.. I expected more considering how much money we paid. Oh well. You win some & you lose some. Glad y'all had a great time!
Omg I have so many stories about being in the car with family haha! I know exactly what you mean about about testing every nerve. And thanks - I wish we could have met up but we just really wanted to hurry and get back home to Caleb!
Deletehow lovely to spend this time together and how awesome that you had that $56 margharita bought for your hubs, I love that someone chose to do that. We have a massive road trip planned for next Spring - Nova Scotia to Key West with two families going with two kids each and a dog. I am not even sure we dare to do it
ReplyDelete41 hours, holy smokes! You know it's true love when you can survive that many hours in the car and have a good time. Our first long car trip was to Boston and everyone was like "OOOOH THIS IS A REAL TEST OF A RELATIONSHIP!!" Luckily we survived and had fun :)
